Smart Cards Proposed for Causeway Linking Johor and Singapore
During the Budget 2008 Consultation held recently in Putrajaya, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi proposed the idea of utilizing smart cards to facilitate travel across the causeway that links Singapore and Johor. The plan would require anyone crossing the causeway to carry a smart card in order to enter Singapore or Johor.
Traffic across the causeway is expected to increase significantly once the southern Johor development corridor project gains momentum. The development project involves building up the state of Johor into a metropolis similar to Hong Kong or Shenzhen. As the project moves ahead, it’s expected that the flow of people will grow substantially. The goal of the smart card plan is to prevent travelers from having to wait in excessively long lines.
