PATCO Rolls Out Smart Cards for Easy Fare Payment
Riders of the PATCO rail system, a 140mile rail line which runs between Philadelphia and New Jersey, will soon be using smart cards to pay their fares. The new modern fare system, dubbed “The Freedom Card” allows riders to pass through station turnstiles using a smart card that can be reloaded with either cash or a credit card. Additionally, riders can choose to sign up for an auto-reload feature completely eliminating the need to ever visit a ticket window.
The Freedom Card offers a tremendous amount of convenience for riders, and PATCO officials are even considering integrating the new system with station parking lots. Similar programs are already in place in Boston, Atlanta, and Washington.
