El Paso Police Upgrade Their ID Cards
New ID rules have mandated large police departments in Texas to up their identification standards by 2010. The El Paso Department is already putting its secure ID plan into action. Soon, officers will carry ID cards containing not only their personal info and photo, but also biometric information such as thumb prints. The cards will be used to control access to secure facilities, and also to serve as verification during traffic stops.
One reason for the new cards is the current problem of random individuals impersonating police officers by using fake ID cards. The new police IDs will contain security features that greatly reduce the possibility of fraudulent reproduction. In addition, there will be a 24-hour hotline that citizens can call to verify whether or not the person on the card is in fact an active police officer.
